about

I wrote this song after reading about myself in Kathleen Norris' book, "Acedia & Me". This was largely an exercise in hearing my own foolishness spoken out loud so that I could recognize it as such.

lyrics

the advantage to being sad is that
you think you understand everyone
around you
if you shine a light on me
i'll squint my eyes and curse the beam
that stopped my view of shadows
and dark dreams

Bring me flowers with no thorns
String white lights along the bars
It's so much better
It's so much better
inside my prison
inside my prison

In a city on a hill or in the valley of despair,
Well, Jesus, I live in the suburbs and I don't often see you there
But I have all I need
Where I am safe and I am free
I may have life and have it mediocrely

bridge:
It's just the daylight
I still sleep just fine
I can fill my mind, I can fill my mind
Just fill the daylight
Keep me occupied
So I won't mind, so I won't mind

the savior in my plan
will pull the plow up from my hand
He wants to please me
And on my misery
I will spend all my energy
And I will blame him when there is no need for me

Chorus:
Bring me flowers with no thorns
String white lights along the bars
It's so much better
It's so much better
inside my prison
inside my prison
